Minogue delivers dance floor album

Australian pop songstress Kylie Minogue has recently released her 10th studio album X in America. The album follows her last release Body Language in 2003 and her battle with breast cancer in 2005. X has a sexy and fun feel to it that is vigorous and full of energy. There’s no doubt that this album was tailored specifically for the dance floor, just like her past albums.

The songs on this album have a modern sound with splashes of ’80s pop style, and, to me, that’s absolutely enjoyable.
Throughout X Minogue’s voice remains strong and sensual, and her shallow breathing and smooth cooing only add to the sizzling sex factor of this album.
It starts with the thumping electro-pop single “2 Hearts,” a fresh song about falling in love that is sassy and playful and possesses an extremely catchy hook.
My favorite song on this album is “Stars,” which features a mesmerizing backing track that will get stuck in your head for days. This song has a pop-rock feel that is perky, catchy and captivating.

As much as I tried to simply enjoy X as a fun and light-hearted album, I couldn’t help but snicker when listening to the ridiculous lyrics in the song “Speakerphone.”
When Minogue tells me, in a heavily processed voice, to “Drop your socks and grab your mini boom box,” I can’t help but squirm with embarrassment for her.
These lyrics are so silly, it hurts. This song feels inappropriate for Minogue’s style and comes off as a weak attempt to sound like her younger competitors such as Gwen Stefani or Nelly Furtado.
X isn’t all dance club tracks, though, as shown with “No More Rain,” which was written as Minogue was recovering from her breast cancer treatment. It serves as a pleasant surprise as it is vastly different than any other song on this album with its airy and acoustic feel.
It’s very personal compared to her typical hits, as it contains encouraging lyrics by Minogue that let you in on her courageous battle and triumph with cancer.
Kylie Minogue, who turns 40 this year and looks as stunning as ever, is a total pop goddess overseas, but in the U.S., she’s still somewhat overlooked.
Although she might not always be held in the same elite category as Madonna, Mariah and Beyoncé, I think this pint-sized diva is absolutely brilliant, fun and fabulous.
And so is this album.
