Kylie Minogue dazzled in front of 20 million American TV viewers as she took centre stage on America’s version of Dancing with the Stars. The Australian pop star sang two songs in what was her first US TV performance in five years.

“Are you feeling good?” Minogue, wearing a platinum blonde bobbed wig, red sequined mini-dress and gold platform shoes, asked the studio audience before singing her ballad, All I See.

The gig on one of America’s highest-rating shows was perfect timing for Minogue who has struggled to dominate US charts as she has in Australia and Europe.

Her latest album X was released in American stores today.

Celebrity contestants on the US Dancing with the Stars include Priscilla Presley, NFL star Jason Taylor and actors Shannon Elizabeth, Steve Guttenberg and deaf Oscar winner Marlee Matlin.

Minogue’s US publicity campaign continues over the next few days, with guest appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

While Minogue dazzled on Dancing with the Stars on America’s ABC TV network tonight, another Australian, Michael Johns sizzled on the grand daddy of US reality shows, American Idol, aired on Rupert Murdoch’s FOX network.

American Idol is the highest rating show in the US, with more than 30 million viewers each episode and Johns sang his way into the final nine contestants.

US bookmakers have him the third favourite to win the show.

“I think this is the best I’ve heard you sing,” American Idol’s toughest judge, Simon Cowell, told the 29-year-old after tonight’s performance.

The contestants were tutored this week by country music star Dolly Parton and Johns sang a rock version of her hit, It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right.

“I think I could write some great records for him so I’m hoping he does become a star,” Parton said.

The ninth contestant is eliminated tomorrow.

American Idol is being aired on Foxtel in Australia.
