British talk show king Michael Parkinson has praised Australian pop singer and fellow Queen’s Honour recipient Kylie Minogue. Parkinson, who recently retired at the age of 72, was named to receive a knighthood for services to broadcasting, while Minogue is being awarded an OBE for services to music in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
“She had a very brave fight, a personal fight, with a severe illness - I think that brought her admiration,” Parkinson said of Minogue in an interview with the Sunday Express newspaper from Sydney, where he is on holiday.
Minogue, 39, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and has since made a full recovery.
Last month, she announced a 2008 European tour, while her guest star performance opposite David Tennant in the Doctor Who Christmas Day special was watched by nearly 14 million viewers - the highest ratings since the program was revived.
Meanwhile, British teen popstar-turned actress Billie Piper has admitted she is nervous about reprising her role as Dr Who’s assistant, Rose Tyler, in the New Year after Minogue’s success on the show.
“I want to reclaim David Tennant as my own after he’s been working with Kylie,” Piper told the Sunday Mirror Magazine, adding that she was disappointed not to have met the Australian singer herself.
“I’m gutted I missed her. I speak to David and he brags about how he has her number in his phone. I want to be Kylie’s friend.”
