Kylie Minogue steals the show at NYE special

Daily Mail, UK: 21st December 2007

It’s the Fabulous Kylie Minogue, raising the temperature as she sprawls slinkily over the piano for Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. Seventeen years after Michelle Pfeiffer did her never-to-be-forgotten pianotop performance for the film The Fabulous Baker Boys, Kylie - encased in a skin-tight gold dress - pulls off the same trick for Holland’s New Year Eve show as she sings a slow version of her old hit I Should Be So Lucky.

As well as her performance accompanied by Jools’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra - with Jools on piano - 39-year-old Minogue also sings a duet with Sir Paul McCartney - Dance Tonight from his album Memory Almost Full.

Their duet marks the climax of a year in which both stars have endured a troubled personal life.

Sir Paul is still in the throes of his divorce from Heather Mills, who is claiming a slice of his £825 million fortune.

Kylie - who returned to performing a year ago after having treatment for breast cancer -split up earlier this year with her boyfriend Olivier Martinez, 41, after four years together.

The couple said the split was amicable, despite claims in the tabloids that he had been unfaithful.

Last month Miss Minogue released X, her first studio album in four years and the tenth of her career.

She also announced she would undertake a European tour next year, KYLIEX2008. Holland’s show, which has long been established as a highlight of the New Year’s Eve television schedule, is Jools’s 15th annual Hootenanny.

It features some of the most popular acts of the year - as well as some legends of pop music.

As well as 65-year-old Sir Paul, Sixties survivors on the show include Lulu and soul icon Eddie Floyd, who performs classics including Knock On Wood and 634-5789.

Mika, whose album Life In Cartoon Motion helped him to become one of the biggest new acts of the year, performs his Number 1 song Grace Kelly, while the Kaiser Chiefs sing songs from the chart-topping album Yours Truly, Angry Mob, including Ruby.

The show also features Madness dipping into their back catalogue for old favourites such as Baggy Trousers and House of Fun.

Among the other performers are Kate Nash - whose song Foundations from the album Made of Bricks was one of the hits of the summer - and Robbie Coltrane doing a turn as Frank Sinatra.

The show, which viewers once believed was performed live until the year Ms Dynamite appeared at the same time as performing at the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, was pre-recorded in mid-December “as live”, with a midnight countdown led by Jools Holland.

Among the other acts are Ruby Turner and the Pipes And Drums of the First Battalion of the Scots Guards.

The celebrity audience includes David Tennant and John Simm who play Doctor Who and The Master. Miss Minogue is acting in the special Christmas episode of the series.

Other stars watching the recording are Dawn French, Lenny Henry, Sir Bernie Ecclestone, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Culshaw, Imelda Staunton, Steve McClaren, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Meera Syal and Gabby and Kenny Logan.
